When are apprenticeships advertised?
We advertise apprenticeship positions in July on https://iworkfor.nsw.gov.au and our apprentices commence in January of the following year.
Recruitment process
Our process is merit based, taking into account the requirements of the job and the abilities and personal qualities of each applicant. It involves information sessions, job-related aptitude testing, assessment centre exercises, interviews and pre-employment checks.
Try-a-Trade Days
If you are thinking about an apprenticeship but have never used a power tool, attending a Try-a-Trade Day will build your skills and confidence. You’ll receive hands-on tools training by qualified tradespeople while learning more about the apprenticeship opportunities available at Sydney Trains.
Try-a-Trade Days are offered at various locations around Sydney in the period leading up to the Apprentice Recruitment campaigns.
Try-a-Trade is a joint initiative between Sydney Trains, the Police Citizens Youth Clubs (PCYC), and Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT).
Electrical Pre-apprenticeship Program for Women
Sydney Trains has a genuine commitment to workforce diversity and has introduced some targeted recruitment programs to attract more women to apply for its apprenticeships.
The Electrical Pre-apprenticeship Program for Women is a 3-week program in collaboration with an external training organisation that offers participants three national units of competency from the Certificate II in Electrotechnology. This program has proven to be very effective in assisting women interested in gaining an electrical apprenticeship.
We deliver this program in conjunction with a registered training organisation prior to our recruitment campaign commencing each year.
Work Experience Program
Our Work Experience Program offers opportunities for students to experience the world of work at Sydney Trains and gain a better understanding of the career options available in the rail industry.
You can spend a week with us and learn about:
- Diesel/Plant mechanics with our Heavy Plant team, which repairs and maintains a large fleet of track maintenance machines
- Our Business Studies program which will provide opportunities to gain experience at our training facility at Petersham in a range of office procedures and tasks
Please note that the work experience program is subject to change due to COVID-19 requirements.
