Variety of work

As a NSW Government agency, State Transit offers stable employment and a range of career options including; bus drivers, scheduling/rostering, Network Control Centre, fleet and maintenance, mechanic roles and apprenticeships, finance/IT, communications, HR, and safety roles.

Free and discounted travel

Full time and part time employees an are entitled to an employee Opal pass to travel free on government bus, rail and ferry services. They are also entitled to some free and discounted family state and interstate rail travel (conditions apply) including the Indian Pacific and Ghan.

Salary and conditions

The starting pay for drivers as of June 2019 is $27.35 per hour ($1,039.60 per week) and $29.42 per hour ($1,118.10 per week) for drivers who have already obtained their Certificate III in Bus Operations.

Additional entitlements can include; shift penalties based on start/finish times and weekend and public holiday work, an allowance for driving articulated buses and special allowances for maintenance staff working at heights, in confined paces and with hazardous materials.

Generous leave

We offer a range of leave options to support your lifestyle including:

  • Annual leave, up to 5 weeks per year with up to 20% leave loading
  • Up to 15 days of sick leave/carer’s leave
  • Eight weeks of extended (long service) leave after 10 years of service
  • Up to 14 weeks of paid maternity or adoption leave, and up to 104 weeks of unpaid parental leave
  • Option to purchase up to four weeks of additional leave over a 12 month period
  • We also have a range of other leave available (e.g. bereavement leave, military leave, career break) to help support you and your family at times of need

Training

State Transit is a Registered Training Organisation and provides accredited, job-based training and assessment to ensure our drivers and apprentices achieve competencies to the national industry standard. Training and development assistance includes; Bus Operator Traineeships (two years full-time or three years part-time), Body Builder and Motor Mechanic Apprenticeships (four years full time), study assistance and leave

We like to foster our own talent and there are a number of special benefits; tools, uniforms and PPE, TAFE fees for apprentices paid upfront, reimbursement for TAFE learning materials and textbooks, access to the Commonwealth Government's Trade Support Loan Scheme which supports apprentices with the cost of living and other incidental learning expenses (Australian Apprenticeships website), opportunity to become a permanent tradesperson through a merit selection process conducted within 12 months of completion.
