Parramatta Light Rail
Project overview
The Parramatta Light Rail is one of the NSW Government’s major public transport projects, part of a record $93 billion infrastructure program across the state.
Parramatta Light Rail will connect Westmead to Carlingford via the Parramatta CBD and Camellia, and will run for 12 kilometres, with 16 stops.
Key benefits
- High-frequency ‘turn-up-and-go’ light rail services seven days a week, departing approximately every 7.5 minutes in peak periods.
- Modern and comfortable air-conditioned vehicles, 45 metres long, driver-operated and integrated with the Opal card network.
- Two new light rail and pedestrian zones along Church and Macquarie Streets in the Parramatta CBD.
- A new shared pedestrian and cycle path between Carlingford and Parramatta.
The Parramatta Light Rail will connect the Parramatta CBD to the Westmead Health Precinct, Cumberland Hospital Precinct, the Bankwest Stadium, a new Powerhouse Museum and cultural precinct on the Parramatta River, the Camellia Town Centre, the private and social housing redevelopment at Telopea, the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse and three Western Sydney University campuses.
The Final Business Case for the second stage of Parramatta Light Rail, connecting Parramatta CBD to Ermington, Melrose Park, Wentworth Point and Sydney Olympic Park, is being considered by the NSW Government, with an investment decision to follow.
Once completed, Parramatta Light Rail will bring major benefits to businesses, local residents, commuters and visitors, supporting the development of Parramatta and providing a catalyst for further investment in the area.
Major construction on the Parramatta Light Rail is underway, with passenger services expected to begin in 2023.
