Broken Hill powers up new electric vehicle charger

Broken Hill is celebrating the launch of a new electric vehicle fast charging station, the most westerly charger in NSW.

The charger has been delivered by a partnership between the NSW Government and the NRMA to deliver at least 20 fast chargers across the regions to extend the regional electric vehicle travel network.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said the fast chargers will be able to charge an average electric vehicle in around 30 minutes.

“This charger will be the most western charger in NSW and will be a great asset for the people of Broken Hill, opening up the region for EV tourism and ensuring locals are able to consider purchasing electric vehicles,” Minister Farraway said.

“We know that the future will be increasingly connected, automated, shared and electric so this is about future proofing our infrastructure to ensure regional NSW is at the forefront of the transition.”

NRMA Head of EV Charging and Partnerships, Suzana Barbir said the unveiling of the Broken Hill charger would open up the region to visitors and give more choice to local residents looking to make the switch to electric vehicles.

“With our newest chargers along the Castlereagh Highway and a network of more than 50 EV chargers, we are on our way to our goal of 95 per cent of Member’s journeys being within 150km of one of our fast charging stations,” Ms Baribir said.

“Standard public EV chargers can take between three and six hours and charging off the grid at home or overnight accommodation can take up to 12 hours to reach 100 per cent.”

The new EV charger is located on Bromide Street in the centre of Broken Hill, near the Bit Ant.
