Broken Hill traffic choke point transformed after major upgrade

Vehicles great and small are now flowing freely through two key Broken Hill intersections following the completion of a major NSW Government road upgrade.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said the upgrades will improve safety and efficiency for all road users travelling through Broken Hill – whether this be local motorists or freight.

“Thanks to the $600,000 investment from the NSW Government, we have been able to upgrade two well-known bottlenecks around the intersections of Crystal Street and Iodide Street and Iodide and Argent Street,” Minister Farraway said.

“While the Barrier and Silver City highways are open to 36.5-metre road trains, it was difficult for heavy vehicles travelling in opposite directions to pass each other at the junctions of these streets.

“Working with Broken Hill City Council, local mining and freight industries and other local businesses, the decision was made to widen the kerbs at the intersections and install heavy duty flexible pavement.

“These upgrades mean road trains can pass each other more easily, turn and manoeuvre without impacting traffic flow.

“Work started in June last year providing 20 jobs over the life of the project with finishing touches being made this week.
